Belgian fashion designer Ann Demeulemeester graduated from Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1981, before taking part in the avant-garde fashion movement that would later be known as the “Antwerp Six” along with contemporaries such as Dries Van Noten. Ann Demeulemeester founded her namesake label in 1985 and showed her first collection in Paris in 1991, drawing upon gothic and bohemian styling with an air of romanticism. Demeulemeester’s designs are imbued with a strong narrative and rebellious spirit, which is often inspired by poetry, art, and musicians such as Patti Smith, who is frequently cited as a muse. After running her luxury fashion house completely independently for almost 30 years, Demeulemeester made the decision to depart from the brand in late 2013. Since her departure, French designer Sebastien Meunier has been appointed as Artistic Director of Ann Demeulemeetser after designing the men’s collections since 2010. Meunier’s vision for the luxury fashion house is focussed on evolving the brand whilst respecting its illustrious past.
